Five Books for the New Year

At the start of the year so many people feel the inevitable sense of a fresh start or ambition to tackle goals. While I love the idea I of course think there is never a bad time to set goals or start fresh. But January is a popular season for that and its great to kick off the year on the right foot. I thought I would share a few of my favorite books that would be great to read this month or incorporate into a new routine.

When Less Becomes More by Emily Ley

I loved this read by Emily Ley, I have loved all of her books actually but this one lit a fire under my bum. I may read it again to help get myself back on track. It is a wonderful reminder to slow down and focus on simplicity, the little things and what brings you joy.

A Gratitude Journal

I have kept a gratitude journal on and off for over 5 years now. I’m terrible and switching to a new one once finished (hence the “off time”) but I always notice a big difference in my mindset when consistently using one. I have tried a few different styles, there are so many out there but here are a few I love; The 6 Minute Diary, Papier Gratitude Journal, The 5 Minute Journal, and More Than Gratitude (pictured above). I personally love using one that provides prompts, but any blank journal works too. Taking the time to write about what your grateful for and the things that brought you joy is a great way to start and end your day.

Living A Beautiful Life by Alexandra Stoddard

This book was given to me by my mother-in-law early last year. I loved it so much that I finished within a few days. I had given myself the goal to focus on the beauty around me and make everyday more beautiful. This book was the perfect accompaniment to that goal and gave me lots of inspiration and ideas. I am actually starting to re-read it to help me remain focused on my goals this year and create practical yet beautiful surroundings.

Evergreen by Lydia Millen

This beautiful book by Lydia Millen tackles the year by season, starting in January with “Mid-Winter”. She discusses the importance of finding more joy and contentment within your everyday life. She also shares the impact that connecting with nature year round can have on your mood. This past year particularly I tried to spend more time outside and to find joy in nature whether it meant long hikes/walks as a family exploring a new trail or just a walk to the park/school. I really love Lydia’s take on it all and I think you will too! Currently only the audio and e-books are available in the US, unless you order through Jaff & Neale or Waterstones. But the hardcopy is set to release in the US this March or you can find the audio and e-book via Amazon for now!

The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin

I read this book several years ago but still often think about it or occasionally reference certain chapters. I love that this book it broken down by month so you can easily begin to make little changes each month rather than feeling like you need to change or tackle everything at once. Even though the book starts in January you can start it anytime of year, but of course now would be a great time to do so!

I hope these books bring you as much joy and inspiration as they did me!
