Best of Omaha

As we prepare for our move and get ready to say goodbye to Omaha we have been trying to squeeze in visits to all of our favorite places in town. Omaha has been a wonderful place to call home for the past seven years and while I am excited for a new adventure it will be hard to say goodbye.

I thought I would round up a list of some of our favorite spots in town; restaurants, shops and fun things to do. Omaha has a lot to offer and I know there will be so much that we miss, but with our families close by I hope we will be back for visits.

Cafes

Culprit– Culprit used to be a regular weekend brunch spot for me and Andrew before we had kids. For several years it has continued to be a favorite and I will definitely miss their cappuccinos and crispy potatoes.

Cafe Postale– Cafe Postale is a new favorite that I first visited last year. They have the most delicious lavender latte and the cafe itself is stunning, located in the old post office (hence the name).

Restaurants

Avoli– I think it is safe to say that Avoli is our favorite spot in town. The food is incredible and never disappoints. If you go, you can’t go wrong with the Pasta Carbonara and the Budino for dessert!

Stirnella– located in Blackstone, Stirnella is a fun dinner spot. A rotating menu always has wonderful seasonal options. Its a perfect place for dinner our a family brunch.

V Mertz– V Mertz will always hold a special place in my heart. It was one of my first dates with Andrew and such a wonderful dinner. I think it is part of what helped us discover our love of food and cooking.

Bella Vita– Bella Vita is another favorite Italian restaurant, located out in Elkorn but the drive is worth it. This was always a regular date spot for Andrew and I when I firs moved to Omaha.

Dairy Chef– This burger stand in Elkorn is a more recent discovery. We first visited last summer and quickly agreed it was a new favorite. We have already visited twice this spring since they opened for the season and plan to visit at least once more before the move.

Things to Do

Omaha Zoo– The Henry Doorly Zoo is often ranked among the top in the nation. It has grown and improved even more in the past few years with new exhibits like the African Safari and Asian Highlands among other updates.

Lauritzen Gardens– Lauritzen is a lovely place to visit in all seasons. They have a beautiful greenhouse and several acres of gardens to explore. A model train and two full trains cars are always a hit with Jack. Its a great place for the whole family to visit.

Lied Lodge & Arbor Day Farm– Full of trails, hikes and orchards there is much to do at Lied Lodge and Arbor Day Farm. We took Jack one fall to enjoy apple cider donuts and exploring the grounds.

Kimmel Orchard– Another favorite place to visit in the fall. Kimmel Orchard is my favorite spot for apple picking and of course, apple cider donuts! They also have other opportunities for “pick your own” throughout the year.

Vala’s Pumpkin Patch– Vala’s is a great visit in the fall and so much more than just a pumpkin patch. There is something for everyone and perfect for families with children of all ages.

Farmer’s Markets– One of my favorite things to do in the spring and summer is to visit the Farmer’s Market. There are multiple throughout town and always full of great food and fun. Its the perfect place to find items that you can’t always get in the grocery stores and of course a great opportunity to support local farms and businesses.
