Motivational Monday

” I walk slowly, but I never walk backward.”

-Abraham Lincoln

I was planning on writing about something else for this Monday’s post, but when I stumbled upon this quote it seemed fitting to write about.

Clearly this quote is meant to encourage us to not focus on the past. I completely agree that we should leave the past behind us and only look back with fondness and to learn from any mistakes that we made.

However, something else in this quote really struck me: “I walk slowly, but I never look backward.” While I try my best not to dwell on the past I have a tendency to rush through each and every only focusing on whats next.

I am someone who loves to plan and know what is going to happen tomorrow, next week, next year, etc. There are definitely perks to thinking ahead and preparing to the future, but it does often detract my focus from the present.

I am going to try my best to not only keep moving forward, but to take my time as I do so. There is no rush to get through the day. The thing I need to remember is that tomorrow will always come at the same time, but it is no guarantee.

Walk slowly each day and take time to appreciate everything around you. Its ok to look forward as long as you aren’t ignoring what is happening around you in the moment.

What do you do to make sure that you are focused on now instead of yesterday or tomorrow?

  1. Great quote! I am a future oriented person too! I’m constantly thinking ahead. I’ve recently started a gratitude journal in the morning to help me focus on the present day and what I’m grateful for. It’s been a good way to focus on what’s happening now! xo Bryn http://www.waketonroad.com
